A biosafety cabinet (BSC), also known as a biological safety cabinet, is a critical piece of equipment in laboratory settings designed to provide protection for the user, the samples being handled, and the surrounding environment from hazardous biological agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and their toxic byproducts. These cabinets are employed in various scientific disciplines including microbiology, biomedical research, genetic engineering, production of biologics, and clinical laboratory testing where work involves biohazardous materials. Biosafety cabinets are classified into different levels based on the degree of biocontainment they provide, there are Class I BSC, Class II BSC, and Class III BSC. Within Class II, there are Type A and Type B cabinets. Type A recirculates a portion of filtered air back into the room, while Type B exhausts all contaminated air directly outside, providing an added layer of safety.
